The First Fun Walk/Run

Fun Run 2009 Starting Line

The first (and hopefully annual) Fun Run/Walk was held today at Pricilla Landing. The course was a 5k, and was enjoyed by about 60 participants as they made their way through Nauset Heights. Jess Tucker put this event on as a community get-together, and it was enjoyed by all on a perfect, warm (and dry) day.

The next event he is putting on is the Movie Night at the Dunhams under the stars.

A Fox Debates a Beach Excursion

A fox considers a late lunch on the beach

A clever neighbor has decided our stairs to the beach make for each access. He’s been spotted a few times on our lawn, and today made his way onto the beach. Our property is full of rabbits, and my guess is he’s going in search of lunch.

June Nor’ Easter

A June Nor 'Easter?

The storm was a big one, and a few old fishing cottages in Chatham didn’t survive the storm. While their beach front had been eroding for years, it was still sad to see them go. These cottages were some of the last in New England that were on an island, really a spit of beach cut off by water channels on each side. They had no electricity or running water. Only the sun and surf touched their cottages for many generations.

Thankfully our house survived unscathed. Being on a 40 foot bluff I’m sure helped quite a bit. We escaped with just a soggy lawn, and kids that wanted to know “when can we go to the beach”?

The Rizzicos visit

Sam and Amy

Sam, Amy, Ava, and Sammy came down for a very rainy few days. Despite the rain (note the fog out the window), we did get in some slices of beach time, and made sure to have plenty of laughs along the way as all of the kids played and played.

We also got in some calming, and quickly learned that waiting for low tide is essential unless you want linguine with clams instead of clams with linguine. Lesson learned.

First Clams of Spring

First day of claming 2009

Hailey and Dave went clamming this afternoon and arrived back with spoils from the sea. Thanks to Kathy, the fresh clams were quickly served up for dinner over a steaming bowl of linguine and broccoli, cooked in butter, garlic and wine.

Braving June

Burrrrrr....

It’s been a cold June so far with very view sunny days. As New Englanders, we can only keep a positive attitude, and console ourselves in the notion that a rainy June will make for lush growing in July, August and September. In the mean time, the fireplace is a blaze, and hearing the wood crackling is a pleasant sound of warmth inside on chilly nights.

There Be Whales!

Far out beneath the quiet ocean surface lies a world unseen

Thanks to excellent spotting from our neighbor Bill B., we saw a number of whales out in front of the house, just to the right of the start of the Spit. Over the course of 30 minutes, we watched them surface over and over, exhaling, and diving down again, leaving the surface boiling behind them as they dove.

Hailey lost her second tooth last night

Loosing a tooth is more fun when you're five

After much fussing about how to get it to finally fall out, Hailey’s second tooth made it out of mouth and under her pillow. The Tooth Fairy made her second appearance last night, and Hailey awoke to a coin under the pillow making for a very sudden and excited morning.

The Willy Gets “Beach Certified”

Baby Let Me Drive You Car

The jeep has all it needs to go on the beach, and today it took its maiden voyage. It handled well on the sand (for a 55 year old jeep), and even seemed to do well on Callinan’s Pass, albeit with a little moaning and groaning from the four-wheel drive.

A new paint color is in it’s future, and perhaps some smaller tires. Hailey wants it to be painted pink, but she wants the world painted pink!

Summer vacation has started!

Pets at the ready

The kids are out of school, and we have arrived at the house. It’s been a cold Spring in Boston, but our beach is warm and welcoming. Our first summer here promises discoveries of all the house and lower Cape Cod have to offer. In the mean time, our 1954 Willey is “beach legal” and seems at home in a place where time seems to stand still.
